Watch: SOC Creative Spotlight – Grant Adams discusses his camerawork on The Power Of The Dog

Feb 11, 2022

A Conversation with Grant Adams SOC
Hosted by Bonnie Blake SOC

Nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography, Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog adopts the visual signifiers of an American Western while telling the kind of story not often associated with the genre—a slow burn examination of characters grappling with loneliness, isolation, and repressed sexuality.

For our SOC Creative Spotlight, SOC member Bonnie Blake sat down with The Power Of The Dog A camera and Steadicam operator Grant Adams to talk about what went into making the picture. For a film as rooted in the emotions of its characters as this, Adams speaks to the challenge of balancing the technical craft of camera operating with the emotional needs of the story. Beyond that, Adams also discusses his history working with Jane Campion and Ari Wegner, the working relationship between operator and actor, and some of the inventive technical solutions involved in shooting this revisionist Western.
