Cinematography World joins the global film community in mourning the passing of Otto Nemenz — a pioneer whose vision and technical mastery helped define modern cinematography, and whose warmth and generosity left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.
Born in Austria and trained as an engineer, Nemenz began his career in modest technical roles before founding Otto Nemenz International in Los Angeles in 1979. The company became a benchmark for professional camera and lens rental, renowned for its meticulous service, engineering innovation and unwavering commitment to quality.
Affectionately known as the “Pope of Camera Lending,” Nemenz received numerous honours during his illustrious career, including the ASC Technical Achievement Award and Cine Gear’s Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award. Yet those who knew him best remember not just his achievements, but his mentorship, kindness and encouragement.
“Otto was a true living legend — a teacher, mentor, and friend,” said Walter Trauninger, former Managing Director at ARRI, who shared a decades-long friendship and professional partnership with Nemenz.
His passion for excellence and his belief in service over showmanship inspired generations of filmmakers and camera technicians. His influence extended well beyond the walls of his company, helping shape industry standards for precision, care and collaboration.
