Nominations announced for Excellence in Sound for a television drama, factual film & audio products

Apr 18, 2023

The Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS) has announced nominees in the final four categories of their 2023 awards:

Television Drama
Factual Film
Production Hardware or Software Audio Product
Post Production Hardware or Software Audio Product

Founded in 1989, AMPS is a UK-based craft guild made up of over 500 of the most imaginative and highly experienced creative talents working in the field of sound for film, television and games.

Now in their 10th year, the AMPS Awards are presented annually for excellence in sound and are voted on by the whole of the AMPS Voting Membership.

“This year’s nominees exemplify what can be accomplished when sound craft and storytelling work in perfect harmony. Through their commitment to quality, they have created work that sets the highest standard of excellence in motion picture sound” said Andrew Wilson, recently re-elected chair of AMPS.

House Of The Dragon

The first award of 2023, for Excellence in Sound for a Feature Film was awarded to the All Quiet On The Western Front Sound team in February preceding their BAFTA win.

In the Television Drama category, Netflix earned three nominations with The Sandman, The Crown and Stranger Things. HBO and BBC also received recognition with House Of The Dragon and SAS Rogue Heroes respectively.

Among the five nominees for the Factual Film award, three explore narratives from music – Glastonbury: 50 Years And Counting, Moonage Daydream and Who Killed the KLF? – while true crime features Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes and The Tinder Swindler completed the group.

The two categories representing Product Excellence feature a wide range of nominations covering most aspects of the modern film sound workflow, indicating the ever-growing complexity of the technology supporting the creative processes.

The Crown

Final voting opens on Thursday 13th April and closes on Monday 24th April with winners announced on Sunday 28th May at a presentation held at the University of Greenwich. The AMPS Awards are sponsored by Dolby Laboratories, Pinewood Group Sennheiser, Bubblebee Industries and supported by The University of Greenwich. This marks the 3rd year that the University of Greenwich has hosted the awards.
