NFTS Graduate Showcase 2021

Mar 5, 2021

The annual NFTS Graduate Showcase is an event that is always looked forward to, the jewel in the crown of the NFTS calendar. Ordinarily, the show would have taken place last week, but these are not ordinary times.

While 2021’s Showcase event will feel very different, the organisers are working hard to ensure it can safely go ahead in a physical form and very much hope you will join them at the BFI Southbank from Tuesday 25th May.

After a year that has tested us all to our very limits, the NFTS are excited to present the ambitious work of a new wave of talented NFTS graduates, ready to make their mark on the film, television and games industries.

Under normal circumstances, graduate films made at the NFTS are the culmination of two years of sheer hard work and determination. But making and finishing an NFTS graduate film in the midst of a global pandemic, with a shorter production window and under strict Covid-19 filming protocols?

It has been an unimaginably tough year, one that has presented many unforeseen challenges. But against the odds, the soon to graduate cohort have produced remarkable work. They have dug deep and at every juncture displayed boundless resilience and a relentless drive to keep pushing forward.

From Animation to Documentary, Television Entertainment to Science and Natural History, Fiction to Games Design, Marketing and Comedy, the Graduation Showcase 2021 will present content that challenges convention, deeply connects with audiences and mines new and innovative modes of storytelling. The results of this year’s crop of graduation projects really are simply outstanding.

Despite the pandemic, films showcased in 2020 have achieved great success. Miss Curvy was a finalist at the Student Academy Awards, going to on to win the Grierson Best Student Documentary. Animation O Black Hole! was selected for the highly prestigious and Oscar qualifying, Locarno International Film Festival and Fiction film Stratum Deep was awarded the Silver Tadpole at the Oscars of Cinematography, Camerimage. Three of the six longlisted films for the British Short Animation BAFTA award are NFTS graduation films.

The NFTS Graduate Showcase 2021 will run over four days from Tuesday 25th May to Friday 28th May, supported by BBC Studios.
