Cinematographer Natasha Braier ADFC ASC was recently awarded the National Film & Television School’s (NFTS) fourth annual Sue Gibson BSC Award for her work on the film Honey Boy.
Produced by Amazon Studios, Honey Boy tells the story of a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health. The film starred and was written by Shia LaBeouf and directed by Alma Har’el.
Commenting on winning the award, Braier an NFTS alumna said, “Honey Boy was a real labour of love, a very special film made under very special circumstances by a group of passionate film makers that believed in the process and gave it 500%. I’m so proud of this movie and all the talented, committed and passionate people that worked on it and nothing can make me happier than to inspire my fellow NFTS alumni”.

Braier joins previous winners Charlotte Bruus Christensen DFF, Roger Deakins CBE BSC ASC and Jakob Ihre as the recipient of the award. The award is voted upon by alumni of NFTS Cinematography and goes to a member who has achieved outstanding cinematography during the year. It is named in memory of cinematographer Sue Gibson BSC, who passed away in 2016 and was herself an award winning NFTS alumna, the first female member of the British Society Of Cinematographers and its first female president.
Jon Wardle, director of the NFTS said, “I am delighted 2020’s Sue Gibson Cinematography Award went to Natasha. This award and the nominations and winners over the past four years are testament to the level of craft our Cinematography alumni achieve.”
