June Givanni’s outstanding British contribution to cinema

Jan 25, 2024

June Givanni, the British writer and pioneering film curator dedicated to preserving the history of pan-African and Black British cinema and culture, will be presented with one of BAFTA’s highest honours at the EE BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday 18 February: the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award.

The June Givanni PanAfrican Archive is an extraordinary collection of over 10,000 rare and unique artefacts that documents the development of filmmaking across Africa and the African diaspora, which might not have been preserved otherwise. Based on June’s collections from years of working in cinema, it has grown to become one of the largest independent archives in the UK.

Ahead of the presentation in February, keep an eye out for an exclusive interview with June for an insight into her remarkable career and outstanding contribution to cinema, as part of BAFTA’s ongoing members’ Spotlight series.
