Jack Cardiff was born 110 years ago today on the 18th of September, 1914, in Great Yarmouth, England. In 1918, aged four, he appeared in a silent film My Son, My Son, and his career would continue behind the camera for eight decades until the end of the 20th century.
The recent BFI Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger, now touring internationally, is exposing a new generation to Jack’s greatest Technicolor cinematography on A Matter Of Life And Death, Black Narcissus (for which he won an Academy Award) and The Red Shoes.
For our Dutch friends, CAMERAMAN: The Life & Work Of Jack Cardiff is on the big screen this Friday 20th Sep., at the Eye Filmmuseum, Amsterdam as part of their Cinema Unbound season.
Colour On Sea, a new featurette made from previously unused footage of Jack and director Pat Jackson, is included on the recent BFI Blu-ray of the Imperial War Museums 2K restoration of Western Approaches (1944).
The film is regarded as one of the best British documentaries of WWII, and is brilliantly shot in Technicolor by Jack.
