BVK appoints new managing director

Feb 15, 2024

Dr. Benedikt Siebenlist to succeed Dr. Michael Neubauer

Dr. Michael Neubauer has been managing director of the German Society of Cinematographers for almost a quarter of a century. At the end of March, he will be handing over to Dr. Benedikt Siebenlist, who has been supporting the BVK office since October 2023. The six-month transition period, which ensures a seamless handover of responsibility, ends on 31 March 2024.

Michael Neubauer has represented the interests of the many professions in the field of cinematography – and for the past five years also still photography – for over 24 years. A cinematographer himself, he has built up a great reputation for the profession together with dedicated board members and through numerous publications and successful negotiations. Cinematographers are now acknowledged in Germany as co-authors of film works – something that was hardly imaginable 20 years ago. Thanks to intensive negotiations, the BVK has been able to conclude several joint remuneration rules for the participation of cinematographers in the turnover made by the exploitation of the creative work. Michael Neubauer will remain involved in the activities of the UrheberAllianz Film&Fernsehen.

Dr. Benedikt Siebenlist, the new managing director of the BVK, is a political scientist. His research focussed on associations and he also has professional experience in the field of communication and associations. He combines his academic and professional experience with his personal interest in film and film making.

Benedikt Siebenlist joins the BVK in turbulent times: 2024 will be an economically challenging year for cinematographers and the entire profession – but also for set photography. Digitalisation is an increasingly important topic. On the one hand, the professional reality is changing, while on the other, digitalisation is also a major challenge for the association itself – for example, its organisation and communication. Many things are changing, but one thing remains the same: The BVK will continue to stand by its members as a strong partner in the future, is a reliable discussion and negotiation partner in the film & TV industry and offers an ideal communication forum for members and institutions as well as companies interested in the community.
