Ben Fordesman has taken home the Best Cinematography award, sponsored by Kodak and Molinare, at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) 2024. Fordesman was recognised for his stunning work on Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass’s noir thriller set in a dystopian near-future America. This marks Fordesman’s second BIFA win in the category, following his 2020 triumph for Glass’s debut feature, Saint Maud.
The announcement was made during the unveiling of BIFA’s ten film craft category winners, hosted by Ella Kemp (London Editor, Letterboxd) and actor Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Barbie). Held at the Sea Containers Hotel, the event celebrated the vital role of craftspeople in the creative industries, in partnership with Letterboxd.
Other notable wins included Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap, which led this year’s nominations with 14 nods and secured four craft awards, including Best Casting for Carla Stronge and Best Editing for Julian Ulrichs and Chris Gill. Alex Garland’s Civil War earned Best Effects for David Simpson and Best Sound, while Firebrand and Unicorns received honors for Best Costume Design and Best Make-Up & Hair Design, respectively.
BIFA introduced craft awards in 2017 to spotlight exceptional behind-the-scenes talent, with the newest addition, Best Music Supervision, included in 2022. The remaining winners will be revealed during the 27th BIFA ceremony on Sunday, December 8th, at The Roundhouse.
