Dec 21, 2021

The 2021 BAFTA Breakthrough list, supported by Netflix has been announced, comprising of 36 ‘must-watch’ creatives across film, games and television from the UK and US.

Included are cinematographers Aaron Reid for his work on Stephen and Anna Franqueso-Solano for The Farewell.

Aaron Reid shot three-part mini-series Stephen, which focuses on the investigation into the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence. Directed by Alrick Riley, this is the sequel to ITV’s landmark 1999 drama The Murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Reid also shot Britannia S3 alongside director Joasia Goldyn. Features include 10X10 starring Luke Evans and directed by Suzi Ewing, and Love Sarah directed by Eliza Schroeder. Aaron has worked extensively across a variety of music promos for artists including Will Smith, A$AP Rocky, Paloma Faith, J Cole, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran and Mary J Blige, and has collaborated with directors including Georgia Hudson, Sophie Muller, Nabil, Young Replicant, Carl Addy, Ne-O, Savannah Setten, and Nathan Tettey.

The Farewell, the multiple award-winning drama-comedy film starring Awkwafina, was shot by director of photography and New York Film Academy Cinematography alum Anna Franquesa-Solano.

“I believe in order to grow, you have to step out of your comfort zone,” Franquesa-Solano tells NYFA. “My first big leap was moving to New York without even speaking English in order to study cinematography. A few years later I challenged myself again by shooting The Farewell, a demanding project that came with a lot of responsibility. These two have been so far some of the most important decisions of my career.”

As part of their year-long programme participants will receive professional development and global networking opportunities. To connect with these exceptional talents, or to find out more about the programme, please contact
